Friday October 23rd, The Alliance kicked off another year of the Legacy Martin County Leadership Program with eight participants ready to learn more about our community, strengthen their leadership skills, and discover new opportunities for Martin County!

The Legacy Leadership Program is designed to develop local leaders by connecting participants with the people, places, history, and opportunities that make Martin County special. Through education, discussion, and hands on experiences, participants gain a deeper understanding of our community and how they can help shape its future.

A day of learning, collaboration, and discovery!

Our class met at the Bowling Manufacturing Building to begin a day packed with valuable conversations and new perspectives.

 Starting with a SWOT Analysis

Greg Jones, Executive Director of the Southern Indiana Development Commission, led our class through a SWOT Analysis, examining Martin County’s Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats. This discussion encouraged participants to look at our community from different perspectives, recognize what makes us strong, and identify areas where we can continue to grow.

Next, Lee Lewellen with Lewellen Progress Strategies, LLC, introduced the class to the 5 Voices assessment.

The 5 Voices framework helps individuals understand their natural communication styles, recognize how they contribute to a team, and better understand the perspectives of others. The five voices are Nurturer, Creative, Guardian, Connector, and Pioneer. Each brings unique strengths to a team, and understanding those differences can help people communicate more effectively and work together more successfully.

And here’s something exciting about this year’s class: all five voices are represented! We look forward to seeing how these different perspectives and strengths come together throughout the program.

After a morning full of learning, we enjoyed a delicious lunch catered by Wittmers Catering. Thank you for helping fuel our day!

Exploring the beauty and history of Martin County

The afternoon took us on a driving tour around Martin County, where participants learned more about our rich local history and experienced the natural beauty that makes this place home.

A special thank you to Bill Greene, President of the Martin County Historical Society, for sharing his knowledge and helping bring our county’s history to life. We are also grateful to Ernie Canell, Pastor of New Beginnings Church, for generously allowing our class to use the church’s 12 passenger van for the tour!

From understanding our community’s challenges and opportunities to celebrating the people and places that make Martin County unique, today was a wonderful start to the 2026 to 2027 Leadership Class.

Here’s to building connections, growing as leaders, and working together to move Martin County forward!
